“Vietnam demands China to cancel the plan,” the representative said.
The same day, April 12, the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry delivered a diplomatic note to the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi on Friday opposing China’s tourism plan in Hoang Sa.
Commenting on reports that Taiwan is planning to upgrade piers on Ba Binh Island, part of Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago, the National Boundary Commission representative said, “Taiwan’s building plan is a serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty.”
Vietnam demands that Taiwan cancel the plan so as not to further complicate the situation and raise tensions in the East Sea, he said.
When contacted by Tuoi Tre for comment on the issue, Nguyen Van Cu, head of the General Department for Vietnam’s Seas and Islands, said China has no right to conduct any marine resource studies in areas that belong to Vietnam’s sovereignty.
Any countries wanting to carry out surveys and assessments on marine resources in Vietnam’s sea territories must obtain prior consent of Vietnamese competent agencies. Any marine research activities conducted in Vietnam’s waters without the country’s permission will be violations of the country’s sovereignty, Cu said.
