An Giang

An Giang is located west of the Mekong Delta between the Tien Giang and Hau Giang Rivers and shares a 95-km border with Cambodia. It is next to the Cuu Long River and consists of a few midland areas and low mountains.
An Giang
The main ethnic groups found in the province are the Kinh, Khmer, Cham, and Hoa. The region is located in a monsoon tropical climate where the annual average temperature varies between 26 and 28°C. The two distinct seasons are the dry season, from December to April, and the rainy season, from May to November. Floods often occur from the middle of August to the middle of November.
An Giang is criss-crossed by many rivers and canals which make a convenient water transport system. The two tributaries of the Mekong river, the Tien and the Hau, run across the province. They deliver millions of cubic meters of alluvium annually to the region. As a result, the deposits have formed several islets which are extremely fertile and covered with lush green vegetation.

The Legend of the Betel Leaf and the Areca Nut - Sự Tích Trầu Cau

The Legend of the Betel Leaf and the Areca Nut - Sự Tích Trầu Cau

In Vietnam, during festivals or party times, Vietnamese serve betel leaves and areca nuts for chewing as a conversation opener. In fact, betel leaves and areca nuts are symbolic of love and marriage and are a must during an engagement. How did this customs come about is quite interesting.

The Legend of the Betel Leaf and the Areca Nut - Sự Tích Trầu Cau

Once upon a time, there was a pair of twin brothers, Tân and Lang, whose parents had died since they were small kids. They loved and took good care of each other. They looked so much alike that people often mistook one for the other. They liked learning very much so they came to learn with a teacher. The teacher let them stay with his family. The two brothers studied hard and worked hard everyday. Their teacher was very satisfied with them.

Com Hen( Rice with baby clams) - an attractive speciality of Hue

Vietnam Foods - Com hen has a sweet-smelling flavor of rice, onion, as well as strange tastes of sweet, buttery, salty, sour, and peppery-hot. This special kind of food is of great ancience, simplicity and deliciousness. Hence it is always attractive to many foreign tourists when visiting Hue, the ancient citadel of Vietnam.
Com Hen( Rice with baby clams)
Con Hen is served with a little rice and a lot of vegetables, herbs and fruit, add clams in the center, top with fried pork fat, roasted peanut, fried shallots, or you can drizzle on some fermented shrimp sauce and clam broth.
It requires fifteen different raw materials to prepare for the dish, including mussel, watery grease, fried grease,  peanuts, white sesames, dry pancake, salted shredded meat, chilly sauce, banana trunk, banana flower, sour carambola, spice vegetables, peppermint, salad, etc.
What makes this simple kind of food popular is revealed in the great endeavor to adopt and process its main ingredient – mussel. Mussels are sea species, which must be dipped in water for a long while before being processed.
Moreover, it is a low-priced specialy, thus you could eat it in luxurious restaurants in Hue or even in vendoring mobile shops on the streets.

" When visiting Hue  you could not miss Com hen!" is the most common remark of visitors elsewhere to Hue. So, let come and enjoy it yourself!

Tràng An nature reserve

Tràng An nature reserve
Tràng An nature reserve

We left our boats to walk up 350 steps
for visiting Trần temple on the mountain.
Saturday 4 April 2009 - It was our national holiday. I booked a one day trip (VND 320,000, about US$18) with Vietravel Company to visit Bái Đính pagoda and Tràng An nature reserve in Ninh Bình province (110km from Hanoi). Both places are new tourist destinations, so some road sections and work items are still under construction. I was at Bái Đính pagoda (which is the biggest pagoda in Vietnam) last year, so this time I took only some photos at the site. My major interest on this trip was Tràng An nature reserve as I'd not been there yet.

After lunch, we started a boat ride at Tràng An nature reserve. For 3 hours, we went along the streams through 10 grottoes (from 70m to 320m in length) with beautiful stalactites. We also visited 3 temples on the way, at one of which (đền Trần) we had to walk up and down a total of 700 steps. Even though there were small lights in the grottoes, they were very dark inside. So dark indeed that my camera flash didn't work very well. My photos were mainly taken at the entrances or exits of the grottoes. I've never been to so many grottoes at any one site and it was very relaxing while sitting on the boat and feeling myself surrounded by the mountains. We call these areas "thung" (valley).

Vietnam Pictures - Vietnamese Yếm refers to an ancient Vietnamese bodice used primarily as an undergarment that was once worn by Vietnamese women across all classes. There exists a modern variant called "áo yếm", but the historical garment was simply called "yếm". It was most usually worn underneath a blouse or overcoat, for modesty's sake.

It is a simple garment with many variations from its basic form, which is a simple, usually diamond or square-cut piece of cloth draped over a woman's chest with strings to tie at the neck and back.

Thu Hiền - Lời Bác dặn trước lúc đi xa

Lời Bác dặn trước lúc đi xa

Lyric:

bởi làng Sen day dứt trong tim.

Ôi may sao bỗng có em gái nhỏ,
bước vào, gần Bác.

Rồi căn phòng xao động trong nước mắt.
Những lời ca nức nở, tái tê rằng:
"Người ơi, người ở đừng về..."
Bác nhìn em, rơm rớm hàng mi.

Bác muốn nghe một câu hò Huế
hoặc muốn nghe câu hát dặm quê nhà.
Bác muốn nghe một đôi làn quan họ
bởi bài ca đất nước sao quên.

Lúc chia ly, lời di chúc đơn sơ,
Bác muốn non sông đinh ninh lời hẹn thề:
"Rằng đã yêu tổ quốc mình, càng yêu tha thiết... những khúc hát dân ca".
Chuyện kể rằng trước lúc người đi xa. Chuyện kể rằng trước lúc người đi xa.

9 foods that vietnamese eat for breakfast

Breakfast plays a very important role as it is the energy source for a whole hard working day. In the past, breakfasts were cooked by deft hands of women in a family which enhances much the taste of the foods. In this day and age, Vietnamese women are busier with their social roles and cannot cook breakfast so frequently, so street-food stalls and restaurant are more appropriate choices. This article is going to present 9 most popular breakfast dishes in Vietnam which can both be cooked at home or found at restaurants.

1. Pho

Pho

Pho is not only the most popular breakfast in Vietnam but is also internationally renowned as a symbol of Vietnamese gastronomy. Thousands of Pho stores deliver thousands of taste, that’s why some Pho stores are much more well-known than the rest, and the mystery hidden in the broth of Pho. Although the same ingredients are stewing bones of cows and pigs to cook Pho Bo (Pho with beef) and stewing bones of chicken and pigs to cook Pho Ga (Pho with chiken), an excellent pot of soup is determined by extra spices. Rice noodle used in a bowl of Pho is made of a special type of rice called “gao te” which is famous for its fragrance. Best served Pho are Pho Bo Tai (rare fillet) and Pho Ga (boneless white chicken meat). Others variety of Pho are Pho Bo Gau, Pho Bo Tai Nam and Pho Sot Vang. Lemon and chilly are indispensible for the best taste of Pho.

Here's my wisdom

Here's my wisdom (Tri khon cua ta day)

A long time ago, when animals still had the power of speech, the buffalo used to have sharp front teeth while the mighty tiger was a pure golden beast. A young peasant was resting under a mango tree one fine afternoon. He and his water buffalo had plowed the rice field the whole morning and stopped for a while to have something to eat. While the buffalo grazed and the peasant is enjoying his meal, a tiger came up to the buffalo, demanding answers for something that had puzzled him for a long time now.

“I have watched you everyday from the edge of the forest,” the tiger said, “I noticed the quite curious spectacle of your toil. How is it possible that that Man, a small and upright being who neither has great strength, sharp vision or a keen sense of smell manages to lead you and make you work for him? You are ten times heavier and stronger. Your horns are sharp enough to cut him and your hooves are mighty enough to trample him. The only weapon he carries is a flimsy bamboo stick, yet he rules you and you never run away.”

Son Doong, the world's largest cave

Son Dong, the world's largest cave
Son Doong, a cave belongs to the Phong Nha-Ke Bang grotto system in central Quang Binh Province, has been discovered to be the biggest in the world.

Son Doong cave, discovered by a local 18 years ago, is more than 200 meters wide, 150 meters high, and at least 6.5 kilometers long, though the explorers said they were unable to explore it fully. Bristish explorers have recently discovered that So Dong is much larger than the world’s biggest known cave. The biggest section of Son Doong is five kilometers in length, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide, said Howard Limbirt of the British Cave Research Association team searching the area April 10-14, 2009. Son Doong is much larger than Deer Cave in Malaysia, currently considered the world’s largest, an explorer said (Deer is 90 meters wide, 100 meters high and 2 kilometers long). The Son Doong cave has replaced to take pole position as the world’s largest cave.

Bích Việt - Đất Nước Bên Bờ Sóng

Bích Việt - Đất Nước Bên Bờ Sóng

Lyric:

Khi còn trong nôi nghe mẹ ru,
Cha đáng giặc cuối trời
Khi ta cầm súng ra đi
Người thân ta thức cùng sao trời.
Thương đất nước bao năm
Vẫn hát câu tiễn biệt
Việt Nam đất nước bên bờ sông
Bão tố của cuộc đời
Hoá niềm tin thiêng liêng.
Việt Nam đất nước bao trận thắng
Chiến đấu vì độc lập tự do hôm nay.
Cho ta hát lên Người Việt Nam ơi!
Việt Nam đất nước bên bờ sóng
Đất nước bao trận thắng.
Mãi mãi niềm tin Ôi Việt Nam

Khi đạn bom rơi
Nghe vọng vang tiếng nói Bác Hồ
Khi xuân về nắng đưa hương
Mà lòng ta muôn lần nhớ Người
Thương đất nước
Bao năm vẫn khát khao xây dựng
Việt Nam đất nước bên bờ sóng
Bước tiếp chặng đường dài
Người vượt bao gian nan.
Việt Nam đất nước bao trận thắng
Mãi mãi vì cuộc đời hạnh phúc tương lai
Việt Nam đất nước bên bờ sóng
Đất nước bao trận thắng
Mãi mãi là niềm tin Ôi! Việt Nam.

The best time for traveling to Nha Trang

Vietnam TravelThe best time for traveling to Nha Trang would probably be March or April. The least windy months of the year are May, April and June. In general Nha Trang is not windy ennough to windsurf, with the exception of Doc Lep beach ( 35 km north of Nha Trang), which is usually reserved for experts.
Nha TrangThe weather in Nha Trang is warm and comfortable anytime during the year can be favorable for a trip to the tourism city. In summer often lasts from May with sunlight and hot weather, suitable for natural tourism such as ecotourism, ocean tourism or water sports; while the other months could be pleasing for tourists to visit cultural and historical places such as Ponagar Temple Tower, Vinpearl or The Nha Trang Aquarium.
While most of the South of Vietnam is turned into water for half of a year by monsoon winds, Nha Trang experiences only four “wet months”, from September till mid-December, which are also a time to reconsider visiting Nha Trang. In the first eight months of the year, this coastal city enjoys a warm and beautiful weather and so any day between January and August is good time to start your holiday in Nha Trang.

Quan Lạn island

Bái Tử Long bay
Bái Tử Long bay

View from window of speed boat when I traveled from
Quan Lạn island back to the mainland. There are
many islands like this in the bay.
After I was back home from Hà Giang, I booked another tour to the far north (Cao Bằng province), but the tour was cancelled a couple of days before the trip. I decided to change to a 3-day tour to Quan Lạn island. April 30 and May Day are one of the biggest festivals in Vietnam, so hotels are fully booked in advance and prices often go up. I chose to travel on a tour as it was very close to the holiday and it was also more convenient. My 3- day tour (from 28 to 30 April) costs US$150. Quan Lạn is one of the islands in Bái Tử Long bay (north east of Hạ Long bay). We left Hanoi at 5:30am and traveled 216km to Cái Rồng port, then we changed to a speed boat. After 45 minutes we arrived at Quan Lạn island. It took us 6 hours to travel from Hanoi to the island. We couldn’t go faster as the police always check traffic speeds on the highways and impose heavy fines on drivers who break the speed limit.

Quan họ - unique culture of Northern region

Quan họ singing is a Vietnamese folk music style characterized both by its antiphonal nature, with alternating groups of female and male singers. Most of the songs in the repertoire deal with topics of love and sentimentality. Quan họ is recognized as the Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2009.
Quan họ - unique culture of Northern region

The Quan họ singing Tradition
Ca quan họ, also called quan họ Bắc Ninh singing, is an antiphonal singing tradition in which men and women take turns singing in a challenge-and-response fashion drawing on a known repertoire of melodies. Usually a pair of women starts, presenting in unison a complete song called câu ra (challenge phrase") lasting three to eight minutes. A pair of men of the opposing team responds with another song called câu đối ("matching phrase"), which must match the melody of the women's song in order to be considered correct. Next it will be the men's turn to challenge the women with a song that can be completely different from the previous pair of songs.

Star Apple (Vú Sữa)

Star Apple (Vú Sữa)

Star apple is a fruit commonly grown in the orchards of central and southern parts of Vietnam, though the most famous ones are located in Can Tho Province in the Mekong Delta. The fruit appears round with a smooth texture that is often green or violet. But when cut open, it reveals a fragrant white flesh resembling the shape of a star, of which how it is named after. The fruit’s Vietnamese name, Vu Sua (meaning milk from the breast), is owed to the milky sweet juice contained in its flesh.

The star apple could be eaten in many ways. A simple way would be to peel the fruit with a sharp knife and take bitefuls from it, careful not to swallow its seeds. But this may cause most of its sweet-tasting juice to be wasted. Cutting up the fruit into two parts and using spoon to scoop out the pulp carefully is less messy and saves its precious juice for you to enjoy. Orchard growers eat the fruit as a whole by first squeezing it until it becomes tender and that the juice mixes up with its meat. They then drill a small hole on top of the fruit and drink the flow of mixed-up meat and sweet juice.
