Mystery of Forests in Minh Hoa - Quang Binh

We followed Dinh Hong Nham, a famous forester, and spent several days going through thick forests and crossing over streams to discover the beauty and mystery of caves hidden in deep forests in Minh Hoa District, Quang Binh Province in the Central Region of Vietnam.

We all felt secure when we were led by Nham, who has spent half of his life in the forest and seems to know every inch of the forest in Minh Hoa where there are some magnificent caves that few people know about.

Unforgettable Taste of Xoi Khuc

Xoi khuc (xôi khúc), also known as khuc cake, has its name because the cake cover is made by glutinous rice powder mixed with brayed khuc leaves, covering gram and pork.
Although, xoi khuc is popular through the country, only the one of Hanoi is considered real khuc cake and helps eaters to feel its taste totally. They get this interesting feeling when eating as well as blowing, the white glutinous rice coats the soft good-smelling powder layer and just after a lightly bite diners can see the greasy gram filling layer.

19 Sep to 26 Sep 2012 – I was back to Lai Châu province. I just visited this province a couple of months ago and it was my first ever visit to the 60th province of Vietnam in my list. When I was in Lai Châu last July, it rained all the time, so I couldn’t go to Mường Tè, although I already saw the bus going on the route. I decided I would go back on my next trip to the North West. Mường Tè was my priority destination on this trip. Whenever the Vietnamese say “Mường Tè”, it always means a place far away in the mountain which is very poor and remote, although it’s located only 620km northwest of Hanoi.

The travel companion and I went to the bus station at 5:30am, but the bus only left one hour later. There is only one bus every day from Điện Biên city to Mường Tè town. Our driver put various things onto the roof of the bus and he stopped many times on the way to pick up more guests and we also had lunch on the way, so it took us 9 hours to travel 200km. The road going up mountain is narrow and winding, but the landscape is amazing.

In 2001, the government decided to build the belt road No. 3, from Mai Dich to Linh Dam, in two phases, including a 4-lane road in the first phase and an overhead road in the second phase.

After nine years, the 10km belt road was completed and put into use, facilitating the development of many urban and administrative centers in My Dinh, the city’s western areas. A year later, the construction of the overhead road was kicked off. The route has 4 lanes, with the total width of 24 m, enabling cars to run up to 100 km per hour. The total investment capital is VND 5,547 billion, from Japan's ODA loans.

The overhead road was built in nearly three years, linked to Phap Van road, creating a 15km overhead road.
